Crafter’s Tome Gets a Facelift!

That’s right folks, we are very excited to debut a new look for the Crafter’s Tome web site.  Our old look was a bit tired, in addition to some layout problems that we wanted to address.  So we put our heads together and came up with a new design.  Most of the credit goes to my hubby Mikros for coming up with the core concept and doing all the hard work to make it happen :)

The biggest impact this will have on our visitors is that the recipe lists can now take advantage of the full screen width.  This will allow those of you with large monitors to view much more information than our previous site would support.  The new design should also be easier to read, since we did away with the “parchment” background in favor of a cleaner look.

We also hope to roll the blog into this new version of the site, so that both will share the same look.  The only downside of this change is that we are no longer supporting Internet Explorer 6.x browsers.  If you’re still using it, you’ll get an error message asking you to upgrade.  In the meantime please let us know if you experience any problems with the new site (aside from the IE thing).  We look forward to getting your feedback!

one problem I experienced with the update is when you want to look up another profession while you are looking at a profession the recipe look up interferes with the drop down menu for options.

Essentially this means you can onliy access the top 3 or 4 profession before the drop down menu closes.

lasher: Are the drop-down menus being covered up by the recipe filter options? What web browser are you using? I tested it in IE7, Firefox 3.5, Safari 4, and Google Chrome, and the menus worked fine in those. Let me know, and I’ll see what I can do.

Ok, I just fixed a menu issue with IE8. I’m not sure if it’s the one that lasher was seeing, but hopefully so.

the new layout is a little more cumbersome, but usable. I would like an option to get rid of the white backgroud however, i liked the parchment cause it was easier to read!

i dont know how customizable the website is, but thottbot’s evil twin is something i use for example (text to white, background to black)

  7. Mikros Says:

What do you find cumbersome about it, Hurk? The actual interface pieces are just the same as the old site — or they’re supposed to be.

Hurk: I’m not sure if you noticed, but the recipe charts are actually using a parchment color and not white. The only thing we did away with was the texture from the old site, which to me made the tables harder to read. The guide pages and the home page are the only ones using a pure white background, not sure if that helps.

I have to say, I’m not a fan of the Evil Thottbot style. I certainly understand that there are folks who need to modify the palette for vision purposes. But the color scheme is quite garish, woof. Not sure I’d want to subject all our visitors to that sort of thing. However you raise an important issue and we’ll see what we can do.
