How to Make a Wormhole

First, I want to thank all you guys who left comments about the new Engineering changes that were published yesterday.  I spent most of Monday at airports and on planes, so I was unaware that new tradeskill changes had occurred.  From what I’ve seen, Engineers are rejoicing at all the new toys coming their way and I certainly don’t blame them.  Patch 3.2 looks to be the patch that us tinkers were waiting for :)

There are a number of things to be excited about, but the top ones for me would have to be Jeeves and the Wormhole.  Jeeves may require a bit more effort on my part, but I was hoping the Wormhole would be easily acquired.  So earlier today I went ahead and copied my Engineer to the PTR for testing.  Thankfully I was right – the recipe for the Wormhole is available from the trainer in Dalaran:

Of course the description here is pretty cryptic, so as soon as I found the recipe I knew I had to make one and test it.  Between my engineer and jewelcrafter I was able to cobble together the various eternals and the titanium.  The only thing left is to test… here is my first Wormhole created right inside the Engineering shop:

Neat, huh?  I was kinda tickled that it looked like a mage portal, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from it.  Next, I clicked it to see where it would take me:

Wormhole Menu (Patch 3.2)

I thought it might possibly just transport me to a random location – you never know with these kooky engineers.  But it just gave me a menu of choices to wherever I wanted to go.  This list seemed a tad random, but I was willing to go with the flow.  Anything with options is an improvement over the transporter trinkets of the past, amirite??

Since my engineer is only level 75, I opted not to go anywhere out of her league like Storm Peaks.  Instead I settled on a safe place like Howling Fjord.  Surely I can’t get into any trouble there:

Oops!  Clearly I was wrong to underestimate the mischief potential of those pesky engineers!!  This is me stuck on a small ledge, somewhere near the top of Utgarde Keep.  I was so high up that I couldn’t see any actual ground, just fog.  And as I mentioned, I’m only level 75 so it’s not like I can just fly away from this spot.  Luckily an engineer such as myself is always prepared for emergencies… my hearth was available.  So I used it to get back to Dalaran and safety.

Moral of the story: this thing can malfunction – so make sure you have a backup plan.  Although I suppose you could argue that it did function, just didn’t give a result that was particularly useful to me.  Use at your own risk =)

And from the wormhole description: “a parachute and medical supplied are best kept at hand”.

I guess they weren’t kidding about the parachute! :)

  2. Ian Says:

Can it be used to get to Northrend from Outland, Kalimdor or Eastern Kingdoms?

Either way, loving the idea and I’m glad that both it and Jeeves* will be accessible to a non-raider like me.

    * Apparently the schematic can drop from any mechanical unit, but the tougher the unit the more likely it is to drop. I guess all the mechagnomes in Storm Peaks could be a good thing to farm and get that Goblin daily from the Tournament done at the same time.

  3. Shawn Says:

    I love it!

If the answer to Ian’s question is what I think it is – then we can get back to Northrend anytime. No more being stranded waiting for the hearth :)

I am curious what model they will use for Jeeves.

    Go go Kaliope!

    Warning: Boring Engineering story time!

That reminds me when I first used my Goblin Transporter to pop to Netherstorm. My little ol’ Lev 65 hunter, stuck on a rock floating over Netherstorm, with Area 52 in sight way below. I suck it up and take off all of my gear and make a nice crater. And then I remembered I had my parachute cloak with me…

  5. Tsark Says:

    That. is. awesome.

*rushes to make sure his engineer has all the mats ready*

Ok, I did further testing on the Wormhole gizmo and it worked just fine from Darnassus. I would certainly assume that Outland is also good. The only downside I see is that it has a 4 hour CD, so it won’t rescue you from all stranding situations.

When I left Darnassus I chose Borean Tundra and the portal took me to Magmoth, just north of Fizzcrank Airstrip. I was about a sneeze away from some angry mammoth dudes! Clearly this thing will dump you just about anywhere (I’m 2 for 2 on random locations) and it’s up to you to protect yourself appropriately upon arrival, lol.

I’m glad you guys enjoyed the post – I’m having fun playing with this thing so keep those questions coming :)

I didn’t know where to post this but wanted all your crafters to see this one :)

    PS found this on wowinsider

  8. kaliope Says:

Thanks for sharing Chira – very cute!

I’ve continued my testing with the wormhole device and gathered more stats on the “drop” locations:

Try #3: Sholazar Basin, at the top of the Glimmering Pillar

Try #4: Utgarde Keep, tiny balcony at the top (looks the same as Try #1)

  9. kaliope Says:

    Another update…

Try #5: Ulduar! Yes, I finally got somewhere useful and I was not in imminent danger. Clearly a misfire, lol.
