JC: Prospecting Levels for Ore

As you know by now, prospecting a certain type of ore requires a specific level in jewelcrafting skill. I had previously speculated that the ore became prospectable when you receive recipes for that metal type from the trainer. During my re-skilling process after release I found this was not the case. I took notes on the levels that each ore required as it opened up for prospecting.

* Copper Ore – 20 Skill (when you learn Prospecting from the trainer)
* Tin Ore – 50 skill
* Iron Ore – 125 skill
* Mithril Ore – 175 skill
* Thorium Ore – 250 skill
* Fel Iron Ore – 290 skill
* Adamantite Ore – 325 skill

For those of you contemplating taking up jewelcrafting, the uncommon ores (silver, gold, etc) cannot be prospected. Only the ones on this list are prospectable.

    Actually, I think the way it works is when you can mine it, you can prospect it. For example, Adamantite is Mineable at 325 Mining, therefore it’s Prospectable at 325 JCing. :)

    If that were true then all of us would have been able to prospect thorium as soon as we trained prospecting at 20 skill. I know I couldn’t prospect anything except copper when I first learned prospecting, even though my mining was at 300. I’m pretty sure that I was able to mine adamantite for a full day before I could prospect it. I had a stack in my bag but it was still red to me until I got cut more gems and got JC to 325. Hopefully we’ll get more solid info on this as more folks level up, but this doesn’t really match my experience.

    I think you misunderstand what he is saying.

    If you can mine adamantite at 325 mining, then you can prospect at 325 jewelcrafting. They are equal in level, but different in skill.

    To Prospect Thorium, you need 275 jewelcrafting, or whatever, just like you need that amount of mining to mine it.

  4. Valder Says:

    I believe he meant that jewelcrafting level is the same level as mining skill to mine it.

    So if you can mine adamantite at 325 mining, you should be able to prospect it, if you have 325 prospecting.

    I’d sure hope that prospecting isn’t tied to mining. My JC is an enchanter, not a miner.

    Ahh, you may be right about that =) Sorry Luke, I misread ya!!

    I was able to prospect thorium at 250 JC though, which isn’t the same as the thorium mining level. It would be great if we could get some solid info on this, I’m so confused! Clearly Blizz should add a tooltip for prospecting that works like the new enchanting tooltip and shows the required skill level to prospect.

  6. Gern Says:

    It is like 245 for the small thorium veins though.

  7. wandelaar Says:

    I was able to prospect fel iron at a 290 jewelcrafting level.

  8. kaliope Says:

    Thanks for sharing that Wandelaar, it didn’t even occur to me to test fel iron!

  9. Wings Says:

    I attempted to prospect thorium ore with a low skill, and I got a message saying that a 250 skill in jewelcrafting was required. So there you go.

    Thanks for the great guide. It’s been quite helpful.

  10. kaliope Says:

    Thank you very much for clearing that up Wings! I will update my list :)
